‘No Brainer’ — World-class UEFA Nations League winning Manager to Celtic

Former Wigan midfielder Fraser Fyvie feels Roberto Martínez would be an ideal match for Celtic if the club managed to lure him to Glasgow.

Martínez has been mentioned in connection with the role in recent weeks, as discussion intensifies over the path Celtic could choose this summer.

Nothing is official, but the prospect of the current Portugal boss returning to club management has fuelled conversation, particularly with Shaun Maloney presently part of Martin O’Neill’s coaching staff.

Fyvie is very familiar with Martínez. He featured in the Wigan team that lifted the FA Cup under his leadership and witnessed first-hand how the Spaniard operates both on the training pitch and inside the dressing room. That background informs his opinion.

For Fyvie, it goes beyond status. It is about philosophy. He believes Celtic require a manager who values possession, initiates play from defence and appreciates the expectations of delivering attacking football to a passionate fanbase.

He said: (PLZ Soccer), “If they managed to get Roberto it would be a steal for the club. Celtic are a massive football club but Roberto would be a revelation with his style of football which would suit the club.

“And obviously Shaun Maloney is already there who was with him at Wigan and Belgium. If they could get Roberto it would be amazing for the football club. It would be amazing for Roberto and Shaun as well.

“Tactically, and the way he wants to play the game, he would suit Celtic to a tee. To be the Celtic manager you have to play football in a certain way and I think Roberto meets the criteria for all of that, and just the way he represents himself and the way he is with players and everyone around the club.

“He’s fantastic and obviously he was really good in the Premier League in England, has a good pedigree and obviously has gone into the international game and done fantastically well so it would be a no brainer appointment if he was available to take that job.”

Martínez prefers his sides to construct attacks from deep and remain composed in possession, even under intense pressure. That requires central defenders comfortable receiving the ball in tight situations and midfielders capable of controlling the tempo — whether slowing it down or accelerating it when necessary.

Should he arrive, the playing group would need to reflect that philosophy, and recruitment would have to align with his tactical approach.

Naturally, much hinges on his availability. International management brings a different rhythm and set of demands. Nevertheless, if Celtic are seeking a coach with a defined identity and experience at the highest level, Fyvie is convinced Martínez fits the bill. From his perspective, the appointment would be a logical one.
